Partout ailleurs rayonnait une satisfaction commune, faite d’entendement et de tacite acquiescement. L’homme prit à son tour la parole : « Je suis, divin conseil, honoré au plus haut point d’un présent si majestueux. Nous pourrions si j’en crois les registres consultés, compter sur les doigts d’une seule main ceux qui parmi mes semblables eurent accès à un tel honneur. »

Ainsi passèrent les semaines et les mois, quoiqu’il fût difficile de compter le temps en ces lieux. L’homme y glana quantité d’informations disparates, détails insignifiants, connaissances éparses. Ici comme partout ailleurs, régnaient de grands cloisonnements. Chacun attaché à son savoir, sa culture, son pouvoir, son langage, mettait un point d’honneur à ne les partager qu’en d’exceptionnelles circonstances. Ici comme ailleurs, pour la grenouille au fond du puits, le ciel se limitait à la margelle.
